You know you are in Kodiak when....

  • When traffic reports are replaced by the FISHING REPORTS
  • The water on the floor mat in your car is frozen
  • You automatically remove your boots when entering someone's home
  • You use flat-rate priority mail boxes more than envelopes
  • In Winter, you know who is taking their Vitamin D and who isn't
  • If you don't already have auto-start on your vehicle, you wish you had it
  • You know what a Coastie is, and it doesn't mean you live near the beach
  • You know what Xtra Tuffs are, and you have some
  • You have to do the Kodiak Stomp before entering a store
  • Just because you have a ticket to fly, doesn't mean you will actually leave that day--"weather permitting"
  • It's cheaper to buy DVD's than to have cable TV
  • Store clerks actually wish you a "Merry Christmas"
  • You hear people complain about having to drive "all the way to the other side of town" (10 minutes)
  • Traffic congestion is 3 cars at an intersection
  • Your car doesn't have a chance to warm up before you arrive at work
  • When looking out the window is more reliable than the weather forecast
  • You go to work, church, and shop with the same people
  • Driving a rusty car is "no big deal"

Raspberries and Blueberries on a Hot Sundae (Sunday)

Therapy is carrying a bucket through the berry fields and picking colorful delicious fruit!

After the carshow on Sunday, we picked berries in Washington County for 99 cents per pound--and all the berries you can eat for free!! What a deal!
Our freezer is full of berries and fresh raspberry freezer jam....

The Best Fireworks Finale!

Newberg Old Fashioned Festival is held the last full weekend of July each year.

They always have an impressive display--even more impressive is the number of spectators who attend each year--it's amazing. Truly a family-friendly event.

2009 Newberg Old Fashioned Festival

The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival is 4 days of events and activities, centered around Memorial Park. We look forward to each July, to be able to enjoy this hometown venue.

Thursday is crowning of the festival queen and childrens parade. Friday is day-long music and entertainment at the main stage, with nearby food court and vendor booths. A block away is the carnival. Saturday and Sunday morning the local Rotarians serve up pancake breakfast. Saturday night is the spectacular fireworks display (see separate video post). Sunday is the carshow & cruise-in

Kudos to the Newberg volunteer fire department for security and clean-up of the event, and kudos to the boyscouts for their dedication to service during the event as well.

The Last Ride...

After serious consideration, Matt had decided to put the bike up on Craig's List this last weekend. No surprise, it sold within a couple days. The new owner was on the coast, so Matt volunteered to deliver it. It was a beautiful warm day.

No, he's not giving up riding. He wants to have a newer motorcycle. The advantages are several, including availability of parts. While owning the '83 Virago, he had the seat re-upholstered, added a windshield, replaced signal lights and battery.

Nicole rode along with Matt, and I followed in the car. Coincidentally, Matt's dad is camping down at the coast, just a few miles from where we delivered the bike. We enjoyed dinner at Mo's.
