You know you are in Kodiak when....

  • When traffic reports are replaced by the FISHING REPORTS
  • The water on the floor mat in your car is frozen
  • You automatically remove your boots when entering someone's home
  • You use flat-rate priority mail boxes more than envelopes
  • In Winter, you know who is taking their Vitamin D and who isn't
  • If you don't already have auto-start on your vehicle, you wish you had it
  • You know what a Coastie is, and it doesn't mean you live near the beach
  • You know what Xtra Tuffs are, and you have some
  • You have to do the Kodiak Stomp before entering a store
  • Just because you have a ticket to fly, doesn't mean you will actually leave that day--"weather permitting"
  • It's cheaper to buy DVD's than to have cable TV
  • Store clerks actually wish you a "Merry Christmas"
  • You hear people complain about having to drive "all the way to the other side of town" (10 minutes)
  • Traffic congestion is 3 cars at an intersection
  • Your car doesn't have a chance to warm up before you arrive at work
  • When looking out the window is more reliable than the weather forecast
  • You go to work, church, and shop with the same people
  • Driving a rusty car is "no big deal"

Matt tried to shop local.....

Matt has been calling all week to get the best price for replacing the alternator in our car. I always encourage to shop locally, to benefit our community and also for ease of warranty work or any other issues.

Well, the best price was in SE Portland, even with the gas to get there and back. We decided that we would only drive one car there, and we would just wait around until the work was done. We were given an estimate of 2 hours, so we figured we would walk around the area (122nd & Stark). Our options were a bit limited, there was a Burgerville, Big 5 sporting goods, a mexican restaurant, large fabric store and many car dealers. Matt suggested that we just "test drive" cars for the afternoon, so we would have transportation. It was a tempting possibility.

We decided to walk to the Max station a block away, and ride into Downtown Portland. Being a Saturday, there were some events going on. The waterfront Blues Festival, Saturday Market, and an electric car show in Pioneer Square. We opted to exit the Max train at Pioneer Square and check out the electric car show. Matt was very skeptical about the practicality of the all-electric cars, because they didn't hold a charge all day and wouldn't be able to get him back and forth to work (limited mile capability for one charge). But then he saw the electric motorcycle. He started to smile. All the cars there were cars that people modified themselves. There was a small pick-up that had a plug in where the fuel cap used to be. It was for sale, $16K.

We visited Saturday Market, yeah, Portland is still weird. Some neat booths. Our favorites were the photography booths with pictures of Oregon scenery. There was a cute dog with a pink nose, we stalked him and both tried to get a good picture with our camera. One of the last booths we saw was custom-made duct tape wallets while-you-wait. A booth we figured Abi would have started. She has a fascination with duct tape. We have found many a duct tape wallet in her room, and rolls of duct tape have frequently been AWAL from the garage.

We didn't visit the Blues Festival, actually we didn't even see it. It must have been further south on the waterfront. It's a large annual event that benefits the Oregon Food Bank.
The car is fixed, we feel better now, relieved.
