You know you are in Kodiak when....

  • When traffic reports are replaced by the FISHING REPORTS
  • The water on the floor mat in your car is frozen
  • You automatically remove your boots when entering someone's home
  • You use flat-rate priority mail boxes more than envelopes
  • In Winter, you know who is taking their Vitamin D and who isn't
  • If you don't already have auto-start on your vehicle, you wish you had it
  • You know what a Coastie is, and it doesn't mean you live near the beach
  • You know what Xtra Tuffs are, and you have some
  • You have to do the Kodiak Stomp before entering a store
  • Just because you have a ticket to fly, doesn't mean you will actually leave that day--"weather permitting"
  • It's cheaper to buy DVD's than to have cable TV
  • Store clerks actually wish you a "Merry Christmas"
  • You hear people complain about having to drive "all the way to the other side of town" (10 minutes)
  • Traffic congestion is 3 cars at an intersection
  • Your car doesn't have a chance to warm up before you arrive at work
  • When looking out the window is more reliable than the weather forecast
  • You go to work, church, and shop with the same people
  • Driving a rusty car is "no big deal"

On a lighter note...or heavier, depending on the perspective...

This evening Matt treated Abi and I to a buffet dinner out at the casino. In the past, we have enjoyed a fairly inexpensive buffet.
Apparently Spirit Mt. Casino did some remodeling and moved their buffet restaurant to a newer part of the facility. Along with this move, was a larger dining area and a more roomy-er buffet area with the cooks preparing the food within view. Along with this new larger area comes a larger price. In the past, we have enjoyed time with our friends Lynn and Randy at the buffet for a decent price of $9.95, and the price has been going up every time we visit. New pricing goes into effect June 29 at a cost of $18.95 per person. As we pondered the new pricing, while enjoying our hand-selected meal, I couldn't help but notice the rather large people dining around us. I began to run news headlines through my head about how we (everyone) in the US are getting larger and larger, and how obesity is the culprit in many chronic diseases of today.

If you add in the gas prices, and the cost of fuel to get to the casino now-a-days, and the new "larger" buffet pricing, as well as the long-term cost to our health, I believe our famous buffet runs to the casino will now be few and far between.

The food, well, Matt enjoyed the prime rib, as usual. No crab legs tonight, wasn't an option. I had some plank-cooked salmon (it has been better in previous visits), and Abi got her fill of fruits, mac & cheese, and ice cream. We did note that no-expense was spared on the mix in the Pepsi, it was definitely full-strength and burned all the way down. We figure that we have been de-sensitized from the fast-food watered-down versions as of late, that we were shocked to actually have the real thing.

Ab had her try at making a soft-serve cone, the ironic thing is that she now works for a fast food restaurant, but noted she just couldn't make a good swirly. Perhaps it was the "one eye" effect, had she been using both eyeballs the ice cream may not have leaned. :) Love you, Ab.
